Importing data — What currency an amount is in

A column of amounts is read as a column too. If any amount in it is written with a currency, such as £188, 188 GBP or US$1,024.00, the plain numbers beside it are read as the same currency. A currency in the row under the header (see A second header row) speaks for the whole column, and makes a column of plain numbers a Currency column. The symbol or code comes off the number, and the amount is stored as a number. • $ is used by several currencies. It is read as the dollar your workspace works in, or failing that your own, and as US dollars if neither is a dollar. ¥ is read as yen unless you work in yuan. A code beside the symbol settles it: CA$40 and $40 CAD are Canadian dollars whoever imports them. • kr and R are read as a currency only if your workspace or you work in a krone or in rand.
